Ecce Winter at Marlboro

This winter, the Ecce Ensemble will be in residence at the Marlboro Music School. Four participant fellows will be selected to participate in an immersive program of study that will include a performance of a new work. This new composing program will provide community and new perspectives on craft and artistry for emerging composers looking to expand their horizons and share their music. The program includes:
Each participant is provided a recording of either a newly composed work or a work in their catalog they’d like a fresh recording of. Composers will revisit, refine, and share these performances and premieres with fellows, guest composers, and the ensemble.
❋ Recording of a new work❋ In depth workshops on writing for saxophone with Philipp StäudlinPhilipp Stäudlin, widely regarded as one of the country’s most important interpreters of contemporary music for saxophone, will guide participants through the nuances of writing for the instrument, offering practical insight into extended techniques, tone color, and other facets of the instrument’s expressive possibilities.
❋ Microtonal composition workshops with Julia WerntzJulia Werntz, a leading microtonal composer, will introduce participants to the expressive possibilities of alternative tuning systems, guiding them through presentations that expand pitch perception and open new pathways for developing their contemporary musical language.
Artistic Director John Aylward and conductor Stratis Minakakis will lead participants through presentations of repertoire across genres and eras to illuminate compositional models and methods that will enhance their artistic explorations.

The Campus at Marlboro Music is a year-round home for culture, creativity, and community. Home to Marlboro Music for 75 years and formerly the home of Marlboro College, it is located in the southern Vermont town of Marlboro between Brattleboro and Wilmington. Ecce continues its partnerships with arts campuses both nationally and around the world with the mission of providing exceptional artistic experiences for emerging composers. Since the founding of its premier music festival and academy, Etchings, Ecce Arts has long been a group dedicated to cultivating emerging voices from around the world. Ecce’s new Winter residency at Marlboro Music is a high-intensity offering for composers interested in sharpening their craft with dedicated study and the opportunity to have Ecce perform and record a new work.

On day three, we will feature an in-depth presentation on composing for saxophone by Philipp Stäudlin and we will present participant works at Marlboro’s Levi Perry Studio.

On Day 4, participants will be treated to a salon performance of repertoire Ecce repertoire including a commissioned work by Julia Werntz and chamber pieces by Lee Hyla and Isabel Mundry.

Candidates are free to apply but we are also opening our application process to nominated candidates. You may nominate a fellow by completing this form. The nominee will receive an email invitation to apply with a link to our application page. All applications must be submitted by November 1, 2026 so please consider that nominees will require time to complete an application. Notifications of acceptance will be announced on November 15th, 2026.
Program Tuition
Tuition to the Ecce Winter Residency at Marlboro is $1600. We are able to offer this tuition thanks to the generosity of our donors. The actual cost is $3400.
The $1600 tuition covers room, board and all residency benefits (presentations, rehearsals, performance, recording, etc.) Three meals and 24-hour access to the Marlboro cafeteria are included in board. Standard room is dormitory-style with shared living amenities. Participants may request more private accommodations for an additional $800.
The application fee is $25.
